Abundance at the End of the Year

This year has been a very wonderful year in the sewing room.  I have completed this year's work load and found that my deadlines have been met, clients are happy and I can enjoy my family.  I recently read a book called, "The Art of Abundance".  The title caught my eye in the store--so being the sort of person that enjoys "abundance"--I purchased the book.

I sat by our Christmas tree in the corner of our living room parusing (meaning: to read or examine with great care) through the book.  My favorite saying for the evening was: "Abundance--the swish of taffeta and the sheen of silk."  Now they are speaking my language.  As I sat and reflected on what it was that I liked so much about that statement, I realized that my last three jobs for the year were out of beautiful silks and swishing taffeta.  My, my--how good is the abundance of beautiful fabrics.

Here are a few photos of the taffeta fabric. Buffalo check, full length side panels, scalloped and pleated valance.  Covered button accent.

These next two clients chose silk fabrics.  The swags in this treatment were turned on the bias giving it more interest and then embellished with moderate sized gold bullion fringe.  Beautiful yellow silk panels were interlined and pleated for stately beauty.  Nothing can compare.  Evening installation--thus the dark windows.

These pictures show off my fancy work and make me extremely thankful for clients that love beautiful fabrics.  Annie S. did a great job selecting fabrics to rest on her chocolate brown walls.  There is nothing wrong with an abundance of beautiful things--fabric included.

JoAnn G. has a large window, facing north, in her dining room.  The presence of light and fabric selection were key to the success of this room.  We chose a silk fabric with diamond stitching and banded three sides with burgundy red silk.  The attention to detail sets this room apart.  Three inch PVC pipe was used as the rod which was over 150" wide and large finials were placed at each end.

I hope your Christmas is full of abundance in the very things you need.  If you are looking for wonderful window treatments, give me a call.  The new year promises great things for you and for me.

  1. Oh how I love those fabrics! I, of course, am your biggest fan. The plaid is my favorite...people don't use it enough. Thanks for sharing and I hope 2010 is wonderful for you and your family.

Roman Shade

This is a simple roman shade with blockout lining on the back. It will not let any light penetrate. It was for a bedroom and sleeping during the day was a part of the request. "Can it be dark enough in here to sleep during the day?" questioned the homeowner. To that I replied, "Yes, it can be dark enough to sleep during the day!" When the shade is in its most upright position, it is all tucked behind the valance at the top. Then there is plenty of sunshine. Responding to the homeowners special concern is what "custom window treatments" are all about. I enjoy knowing my client is happy and has exactly what they requested.

Dining Room Window

This post is going to illustrate the process of a window treatment and how it comes to completion.  First off, I was fortunate enough to have wonderful clients, Sarah and Jeff C.  They have a beautiful home with architecturally beautiful windows.  This dining room window faces the street.  I photographed the window at the beginning.  See the great shape and size.   They wanted some privacy in the evening while entertaining and yet wanted the light to come in during the day.  We installed an embroidered sheer that was fully operational and solid colored pinch pleated stationary side panels. Then came the fun part.  I designed and created a pattern for a wide slender swag which was a mirror image of the arch at the top of the window.  It was to stretch from side to side, allowing the upper arched area of the window to reveal pure, undressed light.  So starting at one side with the swag, my terrific installers moved to th...

Headbands to Headboards

It has been a few months since I have written something on my blog.  Please forgive me.  My intention is to write and post something new and exciting each month.  I have had this title in my head since the first of the year. Collecting the photos and finding time to write this have been my shortcomings.  I tend to be long on creativity and short on technological ability.  I guess practice may bring perfection. This is Sarah D's adorable bedroom.  She is the daughter to one of my long time f avorite sewing clients.  We started the makeover with a tall white headboard for Sarah's very pink room.  Ralph Lauren PINK.   The sheer fabric panels are white dotted Swiss, an old fashioned favorite of mine used in a strong contemporary way. It seemed just the fabric to add a light and airy feel to the room. The corner computer desk, a great find at a garage sale, was enhanced with gathered white skirting that fell off the front edge covering up...
